Potency testing measures how much of an ingredient is present. For a performance-focused product, verifying the stated amount of key active ingredients helps ensure the formula delivers what the label represents.

Look for testing that is relevant to the product, not just impressive-sounding. A product can be tested for microbes and still lack potency verification. It can have a clean heavy metal result while leaving identity unaddressed. Good quality control is specific, not performative.

Next, look for a batch or lot number. This connects the results to a specific production run. A COA without a lot number may show a general capability, but it is less useful for confirming the bottle you purchased.

Then examine the date and the test categories. A current document with defined results is stronger than a generic statement such as “lab tested.” You may see a result expressed as “pass,” a measured number, or “not detected.” The specification matters as much as the result. “Not detected” means the compound was not detected above the method’s reporting threshold; it does not always mean absolute zero.

Finally, consider the laboratory. Accreditation can add confidence because it indicates a lab has met standards for competence within a defined scope. For example, a lab may hold ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for particular methods. That does not mean every test a lab performs is automatically covered, so the scope remains relevant.

Testing should also sit alongside other signals of responsible formulation: a complete Supplement Facts panel, clear ingredient amounts, disclosed sourcing where appropriate, and manufacturing practices designed to prevent mix-ups or contamination. Clean ingredients. Clear standards. No unnecessary mystery.

Where third-party testing has limits

Third-party testing is powerful, but it does not tell the whole story. A passing contaminant result does not prove a supplement is right for your goals, clinically effective for every person, or free from possible interactions with medications and health conditions.

It also cannot replace sound formulation. An accurately tested product may still use an ingredient amount that is too low to be meaningful, or combine ingredients without a clear purpose. Testing verifies defined quality attributes. It does not turn weak product design into strong product design.
